    The Borea project: a quadrotor uav cradle-to-grave design for space gnc prototyping and testing

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and, more specifically, n-copters have come to prominence in the last decade due to their several applications. Also, in the automatic control research community UAVs have drawn great attention, since their non-linear and under-actuated nature making them suitable for testing a wide range of control architectures and algorithms. In this paper, prominent theoretical aspects, simulations, and experimental results of the Borea project are presented. The Borea project aims at testing space guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) algorithms leveraging a simplified, rapidly prototypable, low-cost, and easy-to-test quadrotor platform. More precisely, one of the main project objectives consists in testing Moon and Mars planetary landing algorithms, thanks to the similitude, in the command authority and the landing approach, between n-copters and spacecraft; during the propulsive landing phase. Indeed, both n-copters and spacecraft can provide a thrust vector characterized by constant direction and adjustable magnitude. This similitude approach makes it possible to anticipate issues and avoid failures such as those that occurred in the Schiaparelli Mars Lander. To this aim, the complete control unit design, and the UAV plant electro-mechanical prototyping were addressed; so far. Specifically, the control unit was designed within the framework of the Embedded Model Control (EMC) methodology. The EMC design, based on an internal model, also includes the uncertainties as disturbances to be estimated and actively rejected. The Borea UAV has been endowed with a control system leveraging a wide range of automatic control concepts, ranging from modelling, identification, and linear and non-linear control laws, to deal with its position, velocity, and attitude regulation. To sum up, all these results were achieved by means of a properly structured cradle-to-grave design process which, starting from the simultaneous plant modelling and prototyping, ended up with a complete flight tests campaign. Most notably, the testing process involved intensive numerical simulations as well as multi-stage hardware/plant tests and models validation. From the control perspective, the several developed controllers were tuned and tested, via proper simulations and on-purpose flight tests, aiming at validating, from time to time, specific functionalities and control performances. Finally, some results coming from high-fidelity simulations, the hardware and model testing, and in-flight operations are provided to underline the most relevant aspects of the Borea plant and the control unit performance

    Optimal Strategy to Exploit the Flexibility of an Electric Vehicle Charging Station

    The increasing use of electric vehicles connected to the power grid gives rise to challenges in the vehicle charging coordination, cost management, and provision of potential services to the grid. Scheduling of the power in an electric vehicle charging station is a quite challenging task, considering time-variant prices, customers with different charging time preferences, and the impact on the grid operations. The latter aspect can be addressed by exploiting the vehicle charging flexibility. In this article, a specific definition of flexibility to be used for an electric vehicle charging station is provided. Two optimal charging strategies are then proposed and evaluated, with the purpose of determining which strategy can offer spinning reserve services to the electrical grid, reducing at the same time the operation costs of the charging station. These strategies are based on a novel formulation of an economic model predictive control algorithm, aimed at minimising the charging station operation cost, and on a novel formulation of the flexibility capacity maximisation, while reducing the operation costs. These formulations incorporate the uncertainty in the arrival time and state of charge of the electric vehicles at their arrival. Both strategies lead to a considerable reduction of the costs with respect to a simple minimum time charging strategy, taken as the benchmark. In particular, the strategy that also accounts for flexibility maximisation emerges as a new tool for maintaining the grid balance giving cost savings to the charging stations

    Arterial Hypertension, Metabolic Syndrome and Subclinical Cardiovascular Organ Damage in Patients with Asymptomatic Primary Hyperparathyroidism before and after Parathyroidectomy: Preliminary Results

    Background. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with high cardiovascular morbidity, and the role of calcium and parathyroid hormone is still controversial. Objective. To evaluate the prevalence and outcomes of metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and some cardiovascular alterations in asymptomatic PHPT, and specific changes after successful parathyroidectomy. Material and Methods. We examined 30 newly diagnosed PHPT patients (8 males, 22 females; mean age 56 ± 6 yrs), 30 patients with essential hypertension (EH) (9 males, 21 females; mean age 55 ± 4), and 30 normal subjects (NS) (9 males, 21 females: mean age 55 ± 6). All groups underwent evaluation with ambulatory monitoring blood pressure, echocardiography, and color-Doppler artery ultrasonography and were successively revaluated after one year from parathyroidectomy. Results. PHPT patients presented a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (38%) with respect to EH (28%). Prevalence of hypertension in PHPT was 81%, and 57% presented altered circadian rhythm of blood pressure, with respect to EH (35%) and NS (15%). PHPT showed an important myocardial and vascular remodelling. During follow-up in PHPT patients, we found significant reduction of prevalence of metabolic syndrome, blood pressure, and “non-dipping phenomenon.” Conclusions. Cardiovascular and metabolic alterations should be considered as added parameters in evaluation of patients with asymptomatic PHPT

    Integrated forest management to prevent wildfires under Mediterranean environments

    This review presents a multidisciplinary framework for integrating the ecological, regulatory, procedural and technical aspects of forest management for fi res prevention under Mediterranean environments. The aims are to: i) provide a foreground of wildfi re scenario; ii) illustrate the theoretical background of forest fuel management; iii) describe the available fuel management techniques and mechanical operations for fi re prevention in forest and wildland-urban interfaces, with exemplifi cation of case-studies; iv)allocate fi re prevention activities under the hierarchy of forest planning. The review is conceived as an outline commentary discussion targeted to professionals, technicians and government personnel involved in forestry and environmental management
